Department of English “Gratitude to Mentors” Professional Development Forum Preview: Academic Planning and Career Experience

The series of lectures held by the Department of English of School of Languages and Communication Studies, Beijing Jiaotong University—the 2022 Fall Semester “Gratitude to Mentors” Salon on the Journey of Beauty Discovery will be held at 7 PM on Sunday, November 27, 2022, via Tencent Meeting (Meeting ID: 347-874-572). In response to the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of English, this session invites outstanding representatives from various fields to share academic planning and career experiences, addressing students’ questions and concerns. The “Gratitude to Mentors” professional development series of forums is a flagship initiative of the Department of English’s Party branch and serves as the salon on “Journey of Beauty Discovery”, a platform for cultivating humanistic literacy in the second classroom.

Segment 1: Expert Lecture from Internship Base


Theme: Talent Requirements and Directions in the New Circumstances and New Landscape
The turbulence in international politics and the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic have introduced new challenges to international exchanges and work environments. This lecture will analyze and address the impact of the new circumstance and landscape on the career choices of our students, as well as practical issues to note as newcomers in recruitment and the workplace.

Speaker Introduction:
Zhang Qian, a graduate of the Japanese Department of the University of International Business and Economics, has years of experience in Sino-Japanese exchanges, international project planning, and translation. Currently serving as Board Secretary and Assistant General Manager at China International Publishing Communications Group Beijing Sino-Foreign Translation Consulting Co., Ltd., she oversees project operations. She has previously held positions as Project Lead in the Marketing Department, General Manager of the Internet Business Division, and Assistant to the General Manager, leading several national-level language service platform development projects and large-scale international publicity initiatives.

Speakers Introduction:
Wang Chen: Studied at the Department of English, Beijing Jiaotong University from 2008 to 2014 (undergraduate and postgraduate programs). Earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Queen Mary University of London in 2018 and currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the School of Foreign Studies, Nanjing University of Science and Technology. Under the guidance of internationally renowned linguist Professor Hagit Borer, he has published over 20 papers in journals such as Natural Language & Linguistic Theory, Lingua, Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Modern Foreign Languages, and Foreign Languages and Their Teaching. He has led two provincial and ministerial-level research projects in Jiangsu Province. His research interests lie in theoretical linguistics, with a primary focus on syntax, mainly in the areas of argument structure, tense-aspect markers, and syntactic word-formation theory.

Liu Lijuan: Studied at the Department of English, Beijing Jiaotong University from 1999 to 2003 and earned a Master’s in Marketing from Toulouse Business School in France. She joined Amazon Web Services in 2018 and currently serves as Director of the Fundamental Independent Software Vendor segment in the Partner Ecosystem Business Unit. Prior to joining Amazon Web Services, she worked in industries such as fast-moving consumer goods, computer networking, and software applications, serving large Chinese and foreign enterprises including Huiyuan, Digital China, Cisco, HP, and Siemens.

Jia Mingrui: Studied at the Department of English, Beijing Jiaotong University from 2006 to 2010 and earned a Master’s in International Journalism and Communication from Renmin University of China. Currently serving as Chairman of Zhongruiyin Holdings and as a board member of Zhongtai Resources Holdings, Beijing Qianlang Investment, Inner Mongolia Transportation Investment Fund, and Xiong’an Green Investment Fund, he made his business segments cover equity funds, securities funds, brokerage operations, financial consulting, and non-ferrous metal entity operations. He has previously served as a financial advisor for the Nantong Municipal Financial Office and as an internal training instructor for multiple financial institutions.
