Historical Evolution

In 1909, Beijing Railway Management Institute, the predecessor of Beijing Jiaotong University, founded advanced classes about railway English and French and beginners’ classes of railway management English and German. During the period of railway management school, there were railway French special class and Japanese cram class.

 

In 1916, the school hired Ma Yinchu, a famous educationist and economic expert, to teach English.

 

In 1949, Beijing School of Management, China Jiaotong University opened special  two-year Russian course.

 

In 1955, 22 undergraduate students who majored in Russian graduated.

 

In 1957, foreign language teaching and research department was opened.

 

In 1962, foreign language classes were offered.

 

In 1964, the students who majored in Russian, German and French graduated.

 

In 1982, the Department of Basic Education, which includes the Department of College English, Russian, Japanese and German were established.

 

In 1984, Northern Jiaotong University and Changping County in Beijing jointly established the Northern Jiaotong University, Changping and offered English Teacher Specialist Major and Trade and Economic English specialist major.

 

In 1986, the Foreign Language Department and Foreign Language Teaching Committee were established. The Foreign Language Department is divided into Science and Technology Russian and English Teacher Specialist Major.

 

In 1988, the undergraduate major of Science and Technology Russian began to recruit students.

 

In 1993, it was awarded the first prize of National Teaching Achievements.

 

In 1995, Junior college classes of trade and economic English began to recruit students.

 

In1996, the Foreign Languages Department was put under the Department of Arts and Sciences.

 

In 1997, it was awarded the second prize of Beijing Teaching Achievements. The English undergraduate major began to recruit students. The Foreign Language Department is divided into Foreign Language Department, College English Department and Foreign Language Laboratory.

 

In 1998, the Foreign Languages department and the College English Department were put under the School of Humanities. A media center for college English courses has been set up, and computer-aided college English teaching has been piloted for the first time in China.

 

In 2000,The major of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics was authorized to confer master's degree in 2000, and students could be enrolled in 2002.

 

In 2001, the first college English Test band 4 substitute system, which was promoted in colleges and universities across the country in the following year, was developed independently by our school.

 

In 2005, it was awarded the second prize of National Teaching Achievements.

 

In 2006, the undergraduate major of Communication began to recruit students.

 

In 2007, it was awarded the prize of National Excellent Course.

 

In 2009, School of Language and Communication was founded. The college English teaching team was awarded the National Teaching Team and won the second prize of National Teaching Achievements.

 

In 2010, it was authorized to confer MTI and began to recruit students in the next year.

 

In 2011, it was authorized to confer master's degrees in two first-level disciplines: Foreign Language and Literature and Journalism and Communication.

 

In 2011, the undergraduate major of Spanish began to recruit students.

 

In 2012, the master major of Journalism and Communication began to recruit students.

 

In 2015, the undergraduate major of Portuguese began to recruit students.

 

In 2016, The Language Experimental Teaching Center was authorized as Beijing Higher Academic Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. College English course was selected as the first batch of national excellent resource-sharing course.

 

In 2017, based on the OBE concept and relying on experimental teaching, the English education system of engineering universities won the second prize of Beijing Teaching Achievements.

 

In 2018, the undergraduate major of Network and New Multi-Media started to recruit students.

 

In 2019, the major of Communication was awarded as Beijing first-class undergraduate major.



In 2021, the Program of English and the Program of Communication were awarded as the national first-class programs for undergraduates,two projects were selected in the New Liberal Arts Reform Programs by Ministry of Education.Institute for International People-to-People Exchange in Transportation Industry was founded.
