School of Languages and Communication Studies

Established in 2009, the School of Languages and Communication Studies at Beijing Jiaotong University comprises two first level disciplines: Foreign Language and Literature, and Journalism and Communication. It possesses distinct disciplinary characteristics and a strong faculty. Currently, the School has 136 full-time teaching staff, including 16 professors, 4 doctoral supervisors, and over 50 associate professors. The School offers six programs: International Journalism and Communication, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Communication, and Network and New Media. Among these, English, Spanish, Communication, and Network and New Media are designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program, while Portuguese is recognized as a Beijing First-Class Undergraduate Program. The School employs diverse educational models, and holds a distinct competitive edge among comparable programs nationwide. The School has achieved notable teaching accomplishments, possessing multiple research institutions affiliated with the university and the School itself. It has distinct strengths in the fields of international communication, new media research, and country and regional studies. For many years, the employment and further study rates of undergraduate and postgraduate students have ranked among the top in Beijings universities. The School offers two Master's Degree Authorization Points for First-level Discipline (Academic) in Foreign Language and Literature and Journalism and Communication, alongside two professional masters degrees: Master of Translation and Interpretation (MTI) and Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC). Currently, there are over 700 undergraduate and postgraduate students at school. In the fourth and fifth rounds of China Discipline Ranking, Foreign Language and Literature program achieved a B- rating. Journalism and Communication program has consistently ranked within the top 40% in the best discipline in China by Shanghai Ranking for three consecutive years. In 2021, the School successfully applied for the doctoral program in the secondary discipline of Research on International Communication of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. 

 
  

Guided by the construction of “double world-class project” and the development of the New Liberal Arts, the School has developed important research directions in foreign literature, linguistics, cultural/literary translation, national studies of the Belt and Road countries, Network and New Media, international communication, and governance of online public opinion. These have effectively driven corresponding reforms and development in the teaching system. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the School has secured nearly 200 research projects, including over 40 at provincial or ministerial level and above.Faculty members have published more than 150 high-quality articles in prestigious academic indexes such as SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index), A&HCI (Arts & Humanities Citation Index), and CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index). Additionally, they have authored nearly 40 academic works and published over 60 articles in renowned newspapers like Guangming Daily and People's Daily. Research funding has increased by over 34 million yuan. The school has been conferred one second-class award of the 8th Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award in Higher Education Institutions. It has also received first-class awards in the excellent academic achievement awards of national professional societies, as well as awards such as the Distinguished Academic Award.
