Faculty Members From the School Attend 2025 National Conference on MTI Education

May 17-18, 2025 – The 2025 National Conference on Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) Education was held in Jinan, Shandong Province. Professor Feng Lei, Associate Chair of the Department of English and Director of the MTI Center, and Chen Jingyu, a faculty member from the College English Department, represented our School at the conference.

Hosted by the National Committee for Master of Translation and Interpreting Education and the Translation Professional Degree Working Committee of The Chinese Society of Academic Degrees and Graduate Education, and organized by Shandong University, this year's conference convened under the theme "The Mission and Responsibility of High-Level Translation Talent Cultivation in the New Era". The event brought together over 600 participants, including members of the National MTI Education Guidance Committee and its Expert Committee, representatives from universities offering translation programs, and industry experts.

During the plenary session, Huang Youyi, Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China and Chairman of the Expert Committee of the National MTI Education Guidance Committee, delivered a report titled "Amid the Rise of Intelligent Language Technology, Translation Enters a New Track of High-End Development", emphasizing the developmental opportunities within the translation industry. Jiang Feng, former Party Secretary of Shanghai International Studies University and Vice Chairman of the National MTI Education Guidance Committee, presented on "Reshaping the Perception of Translation to Meet Contemporary Challenges", proposing innovations in translation education tailored to the demands of the era. Jiang Hongxin, former Party Secretary of Hunan Normal University and also a Vice Chairman of the Committee, spoke on "Prioritizing Quality for Sustained and Steady Progress", calling for an unwavering focus on quality within the translation field.

Insights on various topics were shared by Xu Bin, Director of the MTI Center at Shandong Normal University; Peng Tianyang, Dean of the School of Translation and Interpreting at Beijing International Studies University; Guan Xinchao, Deputy Director of the Translation Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Foreign Languages; and Ren Wen, Dean of the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at Beijing Foreign Studies University. Their discussions covered "AI-Driven Innovation in Translation Education Models", "Project-Based Faculty Development", "Knowledge Base Construction", and the "Professional Doctorate in Translation".

During the afternoon parallel forums, participants engaged in discussions around five key themes: "Cultivation Pathways for Competence in High-Level Translation Professions", "Technology-Driven Innovation in Translation Practices", "Case Database Development and Professional Degree Education", "Cultivation Mechanisms for Dual-Qualified Teaching Teams", and "Design of Multimodal Translation Teaching Materials". Professor Feng Lei and Chen Jingyu attended the third forum on "Technology-Driven Innovation in Translation Practices", where they delivered a presentation titled "Reconstructing the Domain-Specific Translation Education Paradigm Empowered by Large Models: Building a Case-Based Teaching System for Railway Engineering and Traditional Chinese Medicine Canon Translation".

"The Jinan Consensus on High-Level Translation Talent Cultivation in the Digital and Intelligent Age" was released at the closing ceremony. The consensus emphasizes the mission-oriented nature of translation education, the empowering role of technology, and the importance of practice-based cultivation. It outlines a collaborative path for translation education to better serve national development and communication strategies, deepen industry-academia integration mechanisms, and promote the application of technological innovations, thereby providing guidance for integrating government, industry, academia, and research in translation and cultivating high-level, application-oriented translation professionals.
