On the afternoon of May 18th, 2023, the School of Languages and Communication Studies of Beijing Jiaotong University successfully held a lecture themed “The Great Changes in the World and China’s Path—Understanding the Century-Old Great Changes Through Reference News”. Before the lecture, Wang Hongying, secretary of the Party Committee of the School, held talks with Meng Qian, director of the Research Office of Reference News Newspaper, and Chen Xiangyang, deputy director of the Reference Think Tank. Focusing on the digital newspaper entering campus initiative, the two parties discussed the exploration and cooperation in giving full play to the ideological guidance and talent cultivation functions of Reference News. The lecture was hosted by Geng Jiyong, dean of the School of Languages and Communication Studies, with Deng Yuan, member of the Editorial Board and Senior Editor of the Editorial Department of Reference News, serving as the keynote speaker. Ms. Deng has more than 10 years of experience in newspaper interviewing and editing. Since 2017, she has transformed into the new media communication matrix of Reference News and once took charge of the content construction and operation of the newspaper’s WeChat official account. She has created more than one million words of reports in total, with many works rated as excellent articles by Xinhua News Agency. She has also won awards such as the Excellent Story Award at the 3rd “Good Journalists Tell Good Stories” event of Xinhua News Agency and the Good News Award of the Capital Women Journalists Association. At the beginning of the lecture, taking the “Reference News Entering Campus” activity as an introduction, Deng Yuan introduced the development history, current situation and influence of Reference News to the audience. Founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi in 1931, Reference News has always adhered to the editorial tenet of “inoculating against ideological risks”, “experiencing trials and tribulations” and “broadening horizons”, maintained the reporting style of “original flavor”, emphasized reference value, reflected a mirroring function, and tracked cutting-edge developments. By reading Reference News, young people can broaden their international horizons and distinguish truth from falsehood. Quoting reports from Reference News, Deng Yuan explained what constitutes the “century-old great changes in the world”. From four aspects, changes in power, changes in order, changes in science and technology, and changes in development paths, she elaborated on China’s adherence to the path of Chinese-style modernization, the creation of a new form of human civilization, the promotion of multilateral cooperation, and the enhancement of international influence, appeal and shaping power. Finally, Deng Yuan expressed her blessings and expectations for the students. She hoped that Reference News could help students broaden their horizons and improve their political literacy. In the Q&A session, Deng Yuan had in-depth interactions with the students and answered their questions.
