Vice President Guan Zhongliang Attends the Launch Event of Uruguay Annual Report (2020-2021) by Our University’s Uruguay Research Center. On May 11th, 2023, the Uruguay Research Center of Beijing Jiaotong University successfully held the launch event of “Uruguay Annual Report (2020-2021)” in the lecture hall of Siyuan West Building. Guan Zhongliang, vice president of Beijing Jiaotong University, De Lavayó, consul of the Embassy of Uruguay in China, Qian Yunchun, president of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Press, and Diego Paul, Uruguayan scholar in China, attended the launch event and delivered relevant speeches. Also present at the event were Geng Jiyong, director of the Uruguay Research Center, Wang Hongying, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Languages and Communication Studies, Wu Jing, deputy head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Pagra, Uruguayan scholar in China, the research team of the center, and representative undergraduates from the Spanish major. In his speech, Vice President Guan Zhongliang noted that 2023 is an extraordinary year for China-Uruguay relations. In February 1988, China and Uruguay established diplomatic relations. Over the past 35 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the relations between the two countries have achieved considerable development in political, economic and trade, cultural and people-to-people exchanges and other fields, and the friendship between China and Uruguay has grown stronger with time. Uruguay is one of the farthest countries from China, but the glorious course of the two countries working together for development and progress over the past 35 years has shown us that geographical distance has never been and will never be an obstacle to the common aspiration and efforts of the Chinese and Uruguayan peoples to strengthen friendly exchanges. China-Uruguay friendship is a vivid interpretation of the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind. “To become a bridge for closer ties and mutual understanding between the peoples of China and Uruguay” has always been the unremitting pursuit of the Uruguay Research Center of Beijing Jiaotong University. Since its establishment five years ago, the center has successively released a series of research achievements including “A Study on the Modern History of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay”, published monographs such as Uruguay as It Is and Uruguay: History and Culture of the Diamond Country, and organized numerous academic lectures, expert seminars and academic forums. The newly released “Uruguay Annual Report” is another important achievement of the Center. De Lavayó, consul of the Embassy of Uruguay in China, conveyed to Vice President Guan Zhongliang the warm congratulations of Ambassador Lugris on the publication and release of the “Uruguay Annual Report”. Despite the impact of the global pandemic on international exchanges, the Uruguay Research Center of Beijing Jiaotong University has continued to carry out research on Uruguay, objectively introducing the current situation of Uruguay’s politics, economy, culture and China-Uruguay relations, and making positive contributions to enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and China, he wished the relations between the two countries to achieve new progress in various fields. At the seminar, the research team of the Center and Uruguayan scholars conducted in-depth exchanges on topics such as China-Uruguay economic and trade cooperation, the two countries’ experience in fighting the pandemic, Uruguay’s economic history, industrial structure, agricultural and livestock economy, contemporary art, higher education, Chinese teaching in Uruguay, and China-Uruguay relations. After discussions, scholars from both countries clarified the future development direction of the “Uruguay Annual Report”.
