School of Languages and Communication Studies Convenes Meeting on Graduate Employment and Key Semester Priorities (2020-04-24)

On the afternoon of April 23, 2020, the School of Languages and Communication Studies convened an online meeting via Tencent Meeting to address graduate employment initiatives and key priorities for the semester. The meeting was chaired by Wang Hongying, Secretary of the School's Party Committee. Over 60 attendees participated, including members of the School's leadership team, Party Committee members, heads of all secondary units, discipline lead professors, program directors, undergraduate and postgraduate academic administration staff, counselors, class advisors, and postgraduate supervisors.

The first part of the meeting focused on the deployment of special employment initiatives. Deputy Party Secretary Gao Yongfeng and Vice Dean Hao Yunhui, responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate employment respectively, provided an in-depth analysis and specific plans regarding the current employment landscape, employment data trends in recent years, the status and challenges faced by the Class of 2020 graduates, as well as strategies and measures to promote employment. Undergraduate and postgraduate counselors Geng Meifang and Lu Qiang supplemented these reports based on their practical work experiences. Secretary Wang Hongying proposed a coordinated, "all-in-one-chess" organizational framework for employment from the School-wide perspective. She further clarified the responsibilities of the School's leadership team, departments, and the employment task force, emphasizing the need to integrate employment promotion into discipline and program development. This approach aligns with the holistic concept linking student recruitment, cultivation, and employment, aiming to pool extensive resources and implement targeted measures. The School released "A Letter to All Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Friends of the School of Languages and Communication Studies at Beijing Jiaotong University", calling on all faculty and staff to actively expand resources and provide maximum assistance for student employment.

The second part of the meeting featured deployments by the School's leadership team on key priorities for the current semester. Vice Dean Yang Ruodong first provided an overview of ongoing undergraduate teaching initiatives. These included the revision of the 2020 undergraduate talent cultivation plan, the development of first-class programs and top-quality courses, and the application status for 2020 university-level teaching reform projects. He also outlined requirements regarding the School's teaching reform project proposals, as well as work related to academic competitions, international exchange and cooperation, and laboratory and teaching platform development. Vice Dean Hao Yunhui addressed work concerning the revision of the 2020 postgraduate cultivation plan, preparations for discipline evaluation, summarizing the 13th Five-Year Plan, and formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan. He specifically detailed requirements for thesis work during the special pandemic period. Both vice deans emphasized requirements for building a cohesive talent cultivation system integrating undergraduate and postgraduate education, highlighting the ongoing educational and teaching reform initiatives within the university-wide public English curriculum. Deputy Party Secretary Gao Yongfeng outlined key tasks and requirements in areas such as patriotism education and graduation education, advancing the "Three-wide Education" model (involving all staff, covering the entire process, and encompassing all aspects), Party building and ideological-political education, and faculty/staff participation in democratic governance.

Subsequently, attendees engaged in discussions and shared their insights regarding employment work and the advancement of the School's key priorities. Participants offered suggestions based on their specific work contexts, clarifying responsibilities and confirming implementation plans. This online meeting held significant importance, enabling the School's various secondary units and participants to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the employment situation and the focal points for upcoming work.

Moving forward, the School will actively promote employment efforts for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, mobilizing resources from faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders to create opportunities. Simultaneously, in its overall work, the School will ensure coordinated advancement with clear priorities, overseeing all tasks related to the School's development in a holistic manner to foster progress in talent cultivation, discipline development, program enhancement, and scientific research.
