Recently, the 12th Party Congress of Beijing Jiaotong University was successfully held, laying out a new blueprint and defining new goals for the university’s new journey. The School of Languages and Communication Studies has thoroughly studied and implemented the spirit of the Congress. It has comprehensively strengthened the Party building of the School, made systematic plans for talent training, scientific research, discipline development, faculty building, international exchanges, and social services. Guided by high-quality Party building, the School is striving for high-quality development and composing a new chapter in its development from the perspective of the “New Liberal Arts” initiative. Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we will thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important expositions on education. We will keep in mind the mission of cultivating talents for the Party and the country, continue to deepen reforms, strengthen the distinctive features of school running, seize the opportunities to pursue innovative development, and strive to write a new chapter in building a world-class university with distinctive characteristics! We will deepen the reform of the education and teaching system and mechanism, continuously strengthen the ideological and political education of students, and make every effort to establish a training system for excenllt innovative talents. Over the past five years, the School of Languages and Communication Studies has continuously accumulated experience in talent training, laying a solid foundation for further development. The School has achieved full coverage of first-class undergraduate program development sites. Among them, English, Communication, Spanish, and Online and New Media have been accredited as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs, while Portuguese has been recognized as a Beijing Municipal First-Class Undergraduate Program. The School has optimized the “undergraduate-postgraduate integrated” training system. In response to the requirements of the university’s talent training system version 2.0 reform and by closely integrating the talent training system under the “Four Connections Model”, we has revised the version 2.0 talent training plans for 5 undergraduate programs and 4 master’s programs, focusing on nurturing high-quality talents. We has carried out reforms on the undergraduate-postgraduate integrated public English teaching system, establishing a trinity education and teaching system based on assessments rooted in the China’s Standards of English Language Ability (CSE), hierarchical and progressive blended teaching, and one-on-one targeted tutoring. Priority has been given to developing courses such as academic English, English for specific purposes, courses for international talent development, and specialized skills programs. The School has set up an “International Talent English Experimental Class” to create a pilot zone for innovative talent training and curriculum development. We have also launched the “Virtual Simulation Language Experiment for High-Speed Rail’s Global Expansion” project, addressing the key issue of the lack of real-world scenarios in language teaching for specific purposes. The School has improved its support system for academic competitions, adopting various measures such as innovation and competition training camps and a research supervisor system. Under the guidance of the School’s teachers, students across the university have won 284 awards in various English competitions, including 77 first prizes in provincial and ministerial-level competitions such as the “FLTRP Cup” National English Public Speaking Competition. Teachers from the School have also guided students of various majors, including English, Communication, and Portuguese, to win 23 awards in the National Finals of MODEL APEC. The School has secured 2 national-level research and reform projects under the New Liberal Arts initiative and 3 industry-academia collaborative education projects approved by the Ministry of Education. It has also obtained 1 National First-Class Course, 1 Second Prize in Beijing Municipal Teaching Achievements, 19 university-level Teaching Achievement Awards, 135 university-level educational reform projects, 32 university-level curriculum-based ideological and political education projects, 6 university-level first-class courses, and 16 university-level exemplary courses for curriculum-based ideological and political education. One textbook was awarded the Second Prize in the First National Textbook Construction Awards, and another was recognized as an Excellent Undergraduate Textbook and Courseware in Beijing. The School has achieved full coverage of curriculum-based ideological and political education and established a demonstration zone, developing a “1+X” model for such education. Its achievements and experience in this field, summarized in the report Paths for Curriculum-Based Ideological and Political Education in Foreign Language and Journalism & Communication Disciplines Under the New Liberal Arts Background, were broadcast live on Xinhuanet in July 2022. The School has clearly proposed a new approach to curriculum-based ideological and political education centered on “telling Chinese stories well”. Students majoring in Spanish have won 10 awards, including second prizes, in provincial and ministerial-level and above competitions such as the Han Suyin International Translation Contest. Students majoring in Portuguese have claimed 8 awards, including the second prize, in competitions like the Global Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition. Students from Communication, Online and New Media, and English majors have applied for 49 college student innovation and entrepreneurship projects, among which 11 are at the provincial and ministerial levels. In line with the needs of disciplinary and professional development, the School’s laboratories have explored systematic development, promoting the positive role of experimental teaching in fostering students’ practical and innovative abilities. These laboratories have supported the development of high-quality MOOCs for the School and 10 other cooperative Schools across the university, with the total duration of the produced MOOCs exceeding 1,000 minutes.
