2019 “FLTRP Cup” National English Speaking Competition Beijing Regional Semifinals Held: Our University’ s Contestant Yuan Zhewen Wins Grand Prize

On November 3, 2019, the Beijing Regional Semifinals of the 2019 “FLTRP Cup” National English Speaking Competition were held at Beijing Forestry University. The event was jointly organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the National Advisory Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching under the Ministry of Education, the National Advisory Subcommittee for English Language Teaching, and the National Research Center for Foreign Language Education, with co-organization by Beijing Unipus Digital Technology Co., Ltd. and the China Language Assessment Center. Representing our university, Yuan Zhewen, a 2017 undergraduate student from the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, participated in the competition. The semifinals consisted of two rounds. In the morning, 45 outstanding contestants selected from universities across Beijing competed in a three-minute impromptu speech segment, where topics were drawn 15 minutes in advance for on-the-spot preparation. Yuan Zhewen secured first place in the total score, advancing to the afternoon second round alongside 14 other top performers.

The second round comprised three segments: a prepared speech, an impromptu speech, and a Q&A session with the judges. The theme for this years prepared speech was “My Big Story in 2049,” requiring contestants to envision and narrate their stories set in the year 2049. Yuan Zhewen adopted “Believe” as the central theme, vividly presenting his vision of 2049 to the judges, which received high acclaim. After intense competition, Yuan Zhewen ultimately achieved third place overall, earning the Grand Prize and qualifying for the National Finals. The finals are scheduled to take place in Beijing from December 9 to 13, 2019, where top three contestants from provincial divisions across the country and 90 qualifiers from online rounds will gather in the capital to compete for the championship.
