On the afternoon of November 8, 2019, the on-campus selection for the Beijing Graduate English Speaking Competition, themed “China Dream, My Dream,” was successfully held in Lecture Hall 610 of Siyuan West Building. Guided by the principles of fairness and competition, all participants were non-English major master’s and doctoral students enrolled at our university in 2019.

The competition was organized by the Graduate English Teaching and Research Office. Judges included foreign teachers Shelam Zhou and James Foster from the School of Languages and Communication Studies, as well as faculty members from the Graduate English Teaching and Research Office, who provided insightful comments after the event.

The 20 finalists reflected on the history of China’ s revolutionary struggle and elaborated on the contemporary significance of the Chinese Dream-the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Drawing on their professional expertise, they eloquently emphasized the connection between their academic pursuits and the realization of the Chinese Dream. Their passionate and heartfelt speeches won continuous applause from the judges and the audience. Among them, contestant Li Yaxuan shared her travel experience in Japan to illustrate how the Chinese Dream takes root and flourishes; Fan Bosong moved the teachers and fellow students with his story of returning home during the Spring Festival travel rush; and Zhang Yucheng from Taiwan, China, with sincere patriotic enthusiasm, interpreted the true essence of the Chinese Dream.

After a captivating competition, five first prizes and 15 second prizes were awarded. This speech contest provided students with a platform to showcase their talents, hone their skills, and engage in self-education. It helped enhance their critical thinking and oral expression abilities, strengthened their sense of responsibility and mission, and demonstrated the optimistic, proactive, and upward spirit of our university’ s students.
