Delegation From the University of the Republic of Uruguay Visited the School of Languages and Communication Studies

On April 9, a delegation led by Luis Leopold, Vice President of the University of the Republic of Uruguay, visited the School of Languages and Communication Studies. The delegation held a symposium with the research team from our university's Uruguay Research Center and student representatives from the Spanish program in the conference room on the 8th floor of the West Siyuan Building. The meeting was attended by Tong Yawei, Executive Director of the Uruguay Research Center; Li Bei’er, Head of the Spanish Program; along with faculty members Zhang Xiaohan, Wang Zhenna, and Zhao Ting. Officials from the Embassy of Uruguay in China were also present at the symposium.

During the symposium, Leppold first introduced the participants to the basic national conditions of Uruguay, the profile of the University of Republic of Uruguay, its educational philosophy, as well as the talent and technological support it provides for Uruguay's socio-economic development.

The discussion focused on the topic of mutual concern: the national significance of artificial intelligence. Both sides agreed that whether in China or Uruguay, the epoch-making importance of the new generation of artificial intelligence is undeniable. Countries are competing to develop AI, and technological advantages are being transformed into greater discourse power in the international arena. AI development should possess both technical and humanistic attributes; intelligence should be directed toward good and benefit the people. On university campuses, technological literacy and humanistic values should be advanced simultaneously with equal emphasis.

Furthermore, both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on topics including AI-enabled enhancement and upgrading of academic programs, inter-university joint scientific research, as well as arrangements for faculty and students of the Spanish program to pursue exchange studies in Uruguay.
