Theoretical Learning Center Group of the Party Committee of the School of Languages and Communication Studies Conducts Thematic Study on “Fostering Virtue Through Education | Reflections and Measures on Strengthening Curriculum Ideology and Politics Centered on ‘Telling China's Stories Well’ ”. On the afternoon of May 15th, 2023, the Theoretical Learning Center Group of the Party Committee of the School of Languages and Communication Studies held a thematic study and discussion themed “Fostering Virtue Through Education | Reflections and Measures on Strengthening Curriculum Ideology and Politics Centered on ‘Telling China’s Stories Well’ ”. Members of the School’s Party Committee, exchange representatives from various departments, and heads of various departments attended and exchanged views. The meeting was hosted by Lu Qiang, member of the School’s Party Committee and director of the Party and Administration Office. Zhang Gong, in charge of the Portuguese major in the Department of European and Asian Languages, delivered a speech themed “Construction of Curriculum Ideology and Politics in the Department of European and Asian Languages”. He introduced the ideas and current situation of curriculum ideology and politics construction for courses such as Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, French, German, and Japanese, as well as the subsequent construction measures. The Department of European and Asian Languages encourages teachers to continuously explore ideological and political elements from Chinese civilization, connect them with world civilizations, and integrate the latest achievements of the times into training programs and curriculum content design. Official WeChat accounts of courses such as Rail Transit Spanish and Spanish Newspaper Reading have continuously released works related to curriculum ideology and politics. Tong Yawei, director of the Department of European and Asian Languages and secretary of the Party Branch, emphasized that the current construction of curriculum ideology and politics in the department relies on the use of the Understanding Contemporary China series of textbooks to cultivate students’ “ability to tell China's stories well to the world”. The department has actively organized teachers to participate in training sessions held by the publishers of the Understanding Contemporary China series to improve their teaching capabilities in curriculum ideology and politics. Wang Jianrong, director of the Public English Teaching Department and secretary of the Party Branch, exchanged views on the theme “Multi-Dimensional Collaboration to Build a Curriculum Ideology and Politics System for Public English”. He explained that the logic of curriculum ideology and politics construction in public English teaching includes: collaborative goals to clarify the context of comprehensive ideology and politics in public English; collaborative paths to build two major public English ideology and politics platforms ; and collaborative resources to enhance the capacity of comprehensive ideology and politics in public English. Through collaborative construction, it has effectively solved common problems in curriculum ideology and politics construction such as individual operations, scattered efforts, and imbalance and lack of focus. At present, 5 public English courses have been rated as university-level model courses for curriculum ideology and politics. Shu Guanghui, director of the English Department, delivered a speech themed “ ‘Telling China's Stories Well’ and the Construction of Curriculum Ideology and Politics”, explaining how to strengthen curriculum ideology and politics construction for English courses centered on “telling China’s stories well”. He believes that “telling China’s stories well” is a sacred mission of foreign language learners. Narrators of “China’s stories” should have patriotic feelings and cross-cultural communication capabilities, overcome monolingual thinking, and master a discourse system that foreigners can understand and accept. In teaching, teachers need to guide students to pay attention to China’s development and achievements, and cultivate their patriotic feelings and cross-cultural competence. Courses should be naturally integrated with ideological and political education like adding salt to water or spring breeze moistening things silently. Teachers should understand students’ ideological dynamics and teach students in accordance with their aptitude. To realize the systematic and comprehensive construction of curriculum ideology and politics, it is necessary to take curriculum groups as the core, and strengthen national conditions education and excellent traditional Chinese culture education through various forms. Zhang Zixuan, deputy director of the Department of Communication, exchanged views on the theme “Three Task-Oriented Models and Three Reflections”. He explained that courses in the Department of Communication generally have three orientations in the organization of teaching content: competition task orientation , encouraging students to participate in competitions such as the “National College Students Advertising Art Competition” and the “Data Journalism Competition”; broadcasting task orientation , completing course assignments in accordance with media program broadcasting requirements; and learning task orientation , carrying out learning through case analysis and group research. The construction of curriculum ideology and politics centered on "telling China's stories well" also needs to focus on these three orientations. Teachers must first have solid professional capabilities and a pure desire to pursue truth. In the process of constructing the curriculum knowledge system and explaining cases, they should integrate China's practical experience, not avoid problems encountered in practice, and encourage students to create media works that “tell China’s stories well”. Through participating in competitions and media practices, students can improve their professional ability to “tell China’s stories well”. Wang Hongying, secretary of the School’s Party Committee, delivered a speech themed “Paths for the Construction of Curriculum Ideology and Politics in Foreign Language and Journalism and Communication Courses Under the Background of New Liberal Arts”, summarizing the experience and achievements of the School in curriculum ideology and politics construction. The report analyzed the challenges and opportunities of curriculum ideology and politics construction under the background of New Liberal Arts, the characteristics and ideas of curriculum ideology and politics construction in foreign language and journalism and communication courses, the exploration and practice of the “1+X” model for the implementation of curriculum ideology and politics, and the future path of comprehensively strengthening the construction of the four “ones” , namely fostering a number of model courses for curriculum ideology and politics, famous teachers and teams through step-by-step incubation; forming a series of experience and practices; continuously building a resource sharing platform; and establishing a set of collaboration mechanisms, with “telling China’s stories well” as the key focus. The construction of curriculum ideology and politics in the School of Languages and Communication Studies has achieved full coverage in all 5 undergraduate majors, 4 first-level discipline master’s programs, and public foreign language courses for undergraduates and postgraduates across the university. It has formed a “demonstration zone” for curriculum ideology and politics by cultivating model courses, famous teachers and teams, the most beautiful classrooms, and curriculum ideology and politics teaching reform projects in a step-by-step manner at university, provincial and national level. In the future, the School of Languages and Communication Studies will take “telling China’s stories well” as an important focus of curriculum ideology and politics construction, guide teachers and students to pay attention to the needs of the times, respond to the questions of the times, and assume the responsibilities of the times, and fully establish a close connection between the courses learned today and serving the country. The key focus will be on the four “ones”, namely fostering a number of model courses for curriculum ideology and politics, famous teachers and teams through step-by-step incubation; forming a series of experience and practices; continuously building a resource sharing platform; and establishing a set of collaboration mechanisms. Participants conducted enthusiastic exchanges around the theme and combined it with their specific work practices.
