Second “SFLEP Cup” Intercultural Competence Contest Held for Beijing College Students, Our University Team Wins Second Prize

On October 26 and 27, 2019, the second “SFLEP Cup” Intercultural Competence Contest for Beijing college students, jointly organized by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the Beijing Association of Higher Education, and Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press Co., Ltd., was held at Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology. Sun Bowen from Statistics Class 1801 in the School of Science, Zhang Boyang from Communications Class 1809 in the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, and Zhang Jiahao from Siyuan Class 1804 in the School of Science-forming a team after passing the preliminary selection at our university-represented our institution in the competition. This marked the first time our students participated in this event. Under the careful guidance of Teacher Chang Yu from the School of Languages and Communication Studies, the team stood out among 33 participating teams from Beijing universities, successfully advancing through the semifinals on the first day to reach the finals on the second day, ultimately achieving the remarkable result of second prize in Beijing.

The contest assessed participants' multidimensional intercultural communication skills through segments such as intercultural knowledge Q&A, cross-cultural scenario commentary, and telling China stories. After three months of meticulous preparation, the three students mastered fundamental theories of intercultural communication and were able to apply these theories to analyze cases involving cross-cultural conflicts. During the competition, they collaborated with clear division of responsibilities and excellent teamwork, fully demonstrating the spirited demeanor of our university’ s students as well as their solid English language proficiency and intercultural literacy.
