School of Languages and Communication Studies Holds "Student-Faculty Listening Session" on Postgraduate Education and Teaching (2020-03-27)

To further enhance postgraduate education and teaching during the pandemic prevention and control period, and to effectively implement the requirement of "Classes and Teaching Suspended, Learning Continues", the School of Languages and Communication Studies organized a "Student-Faculty Listening Session" for both public and specialized postgraduate students via the Tencent Meeting platform on the afternoon of March 15. The session was chaired by Vice Dean Hao Yunhui, who oversees postgraduate affairs at the School. Attendees included all members of the School's leadership team, heads of postgraduate affairs from various departments and units, laboratory technical leads, members of the School's postgraduate working group, student representatives from the Class of 2017-2019 across all majors, and representative master's and doctoral students from the 2019 cohort university-wide, totaling over 30 participants. The discussion covered more than 30 courses, over 90 teaching classes, and involved feedback from students amounting to over 2,200 person-sessions for the current semester under the School's responsibility. The session was conducted in two stages, focusing on specialized postgraduates and public postgraduates respectively, centering on teaching feedback concerned by students, providing timely answers, and making arrangements and adjustments for the next steps.

Overall, participating students expressed satisfaction with the organization of online teaching order and the learning outcomes, and extended their gratitude to the teachers for their dedication and commitment during the pandemic. University-wide master's and doctoral students provided constructive opinions and suggestions on specific aspects of the Academic English course for the semester, including classroom interaction, analysis of academic writing examples, assignment load, and Q&A sessions. The Department of Postgraduate English promptly relayed this student feedback to the respective instructors and will further optimize future classroom teaching based on pedagogical principles and the format of online instruction. Beyond common issues related to classroom teaching, the School also provided clear feedback regarding student concerns about academic lecture arrangements, thesis scheduling, and employment, explaining the corresponding work currently underway and its progress in line with university policies. These student opinions and suggestions were also communicated to the relevant course instructors and supervisors, with a call for supervisors to take proactive responsibility during this exceptional period and further fulfill their role as the primary responsible parties in postgraduate cultivation.

The Listening Session is an ongoing initiative in the School's education and teaching work in recent years. This year marks the first attempt to fully include master's and doctoral students from across the entire university within the scope of the session. The School is actively taking responsibility, diligently implementing measures, contributing to the pandemic fight, and making unremitting efforts to continuously improve the quality of postgraduate education and teaching.
