School of Languages and Communication Studies Successfully Holds 2019 New Student Welcoming Ceremony

On the afternoon of August 31, the School of Languages and Communication Studies held its 2019 new student welcoming ceremony in the Academic Lecture Hall on the second floor of the Mechanical Building. Attending the ceremony were members of the School’ s leadership, heads of various departments and programs, program directors, counselors, class advisors, alumni representatives, current student representatives, and all 2019 undergraduate and graduate freshmen.

Before the ceremony began, the School’ s promotional video With You in Languages and Communication Studies, the Future is Bright and the welcome video Dear Little Red Berries, Passionate Members of School of Languages and Communication Studies were played.

Party Secretary Wang Hongying delivered a welcome speech, expressing her warm care and best wishes for the students. She encouraged all freshmen to aim high and embrace a broad vision for the world while cultivating the ability to embrace happiness.

Associate Professor Wen Weihua from the Department of Communication, representing the faculty, extended a welcome and earnest expectations to the freshmen. She hoped that students would quickly adapt to their new roles, transitioning from guided learning and research to independent learning and research, and strive to grow into high-quality, interdisciplinary talents with a sense of national responsibility and global perspective.

Zhai Jianlan, a 2009 graduate from the English Department and now a photojournalist at the Central News Interview Center of Xinhua News Agency, shared her experiences in study and work as an outstanding alumna. She offered three pieces of advice to the freshmen: first, to cherish their time; second, to believe in the power of persistence; and third, to connect their ideals and aspirations with the nation’ s destiny, continuously striving for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Chen Kaixin, a 2018 graduate student in Journalism and Communication, spoke on behalf of current students. She advised freshmen to reset themselves and start anew, striving to expand the height, breadth, and depth of their time at Jiaotong University. At the same time, she emphasized the importance of having a sense of responsibility and mission, and taking on social roles proactively. Qiu Yuyan, a 2019 Spanish major student, expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of all freshmen for the teachers’ welcome and wishes. She shared her aspirations and excitement for life at Jiaotong University and called on all freshmen to stay grounded, study diligently, and integrate knowledge with practice.Subsequently, each class presented their unique styles through spirited slogans, dynamic songs, and witty “three-and-a-half-line” performances, showcasing the vibrant spirit of the new cohort of Languages and Communication students.

Finally, faculty and alumni representatives jointly drew the freshmen’ s dream cards, symbolizing support for the new students as they embark on their journey.

In 2019, the School enrolled a total of 240 new students, including 169 undergraduates and 71 graduate students. The undergraduate programs cover five majors: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Communication, and Network and New Media. The graduate programs include four majors: Academic Master of Foreign Language and Literature, Academic Master of Journalism and Communication, Professional Master of English Translation, and Professional Master of Journalism and Communication. The quality of undergraduate student intake continues to improve, with over half of the freshmen ranking in the top 2% of their respective provinces. The first-choice enrollment rate increased by 18 percentage points.
