Geng Jiyong, the Dean of the School of Languages and Communication Studies, and His Delegation Visit the School of Foreign Studies, University of Science and Technology Beijing for Research and Exchange. On the afternoon of June 1, 2023, Geng Jiyong, the dean of the School of Languages and Communication Studies and his delegation visited the School of Foreign Studies, University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) for research and exchange. The two sides conducted in-depth discussions on issues including the construction of the first-level doctoral program in Foreign Language and Literature, the development of organized scientific research, the public English teaching system and model, and the integration of ideological and political education into courses. Chen Hongwei, the dean of the School of Foreign Studies, USTB, Wang Na, Vice Dean, and heads of relevant departments and institutes such as Chen Juanwen, Ma Lihong, and Liang Yameng attended the exchange meeting, which was hosted by Wang Na. First of all, Chen Hongwei extended a warm welcome to the delegation from the School of Languages and Communication Studies. She expounded on the necessity and importance of the construction of the first-level doctoral program in Foreign Language and Literature from the perspectives of faculty construction, sustainable disciplinary development planning, the school’s scientific research capacity building, and professional construction. Combining USTB’s experience in the interdisciplinary and collaborative innovation of “New Liberal Arts" and "New Engineering”, as well as high-level international talent innovation projects, she pointed out that the completion of the doctoral program played a key role in the high-quality development of the school and the university. As one of the few science and engineering universities in China with a first-level doctoral program in Foreign Language and Literature, the School of Foreign Studies, USTB has maintained steady and rapid development in recent years, achieving remarkable results in teaching, scientific research, and social services. Chen Hongwei also gave an in-depth introduction to the integration of ideological and political education into courses in the foreign language discipline at USTB. The university has constructed a college English curriculum system based on the “General Use-General Education-Academic” framework, focusing on the curriculum goals of knowledge, ability, and value cultivation. Dean Chen elaborated on how each course should carry out the integration of ideological and political education in a subtle way according to its own positioning, goals, and teaching content, and shared typical cases. Chen Juanwen, head of the College English Department of the School of Foreign Studies, USTB, gave a presentation with theme of “College English Teaching Reform and Innovation in the New Era”, covering the development stages, development history, curriculum design, and distinctive projects of college English teaching at USTB. Geng Jiyong expressed his gratitude to the School of Foreign Studies, USTB for sharing their experience, and exchanged views on disciplinary construction, talent mechanisms, and other issues. Hao Yunhui expressed thoughts on scientific research incentive mechanisms and distinctive public English teaching projects. Beijing Jiaotong University and USTB are both characteristic double first-class universities with same positioning. Meanwhile, the foreign language and literature discipline and public English teaching at USTB are learning examples for the disciplinary development and talent training of the School of Languages and Communication Studies. This exchange has enhanced the mutual understanding between the two schools in various aspects and laid a solid foundation for in-depth cooperation and collaborative development in the future.
