Alumnus Xu Tan from Our School of Journalism and Communication Wins China News Award

November 8, 2019, marked the 20th Journalists’ Day in New China. That morning, the award ceremony and reporting session for the 29th China News Awards were held in Beijing. On November 1, the winners of the 29th China News Awards were officially announced, and our alumnus Xu Tan was among the honorees.

Xu Tan was among the first cohort of master’ s graduates from the Journalism and Communication program at Beijing Jiaotong University’ s School of Languages and Communication Studies. After graduation, he joined Guangming Daily as a journalist and editor in the All-Media Editorial Department. “I learned about winning the award from a colleague, and I was thrilled. But more than that, it felt like an encouragement,” Xu Tan shared.

He explained, “The award-winning work,The 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up Series, received the Fusion Innovation Award at the China News Awards. It was the result of a collective effort by colleagues at the newspaper. Leveraging Guangming Daily’ s positioning as a leading ideological and cultural publication, the all-media reporting team adhered to a ‘mobile-first’ strategy. We utilized the strengths of mobile platforms—brevity, accessibility, and timeliness—to compile and present key information. Through innovative formats such as integrating text, images, and audio, as well as coordinating print and online releases, we achieved outstanding all-media communication, standing out in the coverage of the 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up.” It was this very excellence that gave Xu Tan “great confidence” in the collective work’ s award prospects from the outset.

In Xu Tan’ s view, journalism is both honorable and demanding. As a journalist and editor at Guangming Daily’ s All-Media Editorial Department, he is not only involved in daily editorial duties and content publishing but also undertakes field reporting assignments. “It often takes up personal time, but having chosen this profession, one must always be prepared,” he remarked.

Xu Tan has always been grateful for the nurturing he received at his alma mater. “During my time at BeijingJiaotong University, I gained extensive professional theoretical knowledge. More importantly, the university instilled in me principles of rigorous work, thoughtful observation, and cautious conduct, which have been immensely beneficial,” he reflected. For students aspiring to pursue a career in journalism, Xu Tan offered this advice: “China, in its transformative era, is a treasure trove of news stories. What we write should be worthy of the times, and the voices we raise should leave no regrets for the future.”

The China News Awards, established in 1990, are the highest national comprehensive annual awards for outstanding news works, organized by the All-China Journalists Association.
