Fostering a Sense of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind and Jointly Building a Better Home for Humanity — School Launches Online Thematic Discussion (2020-03-26)

After two months of concerted efforts, China's pandemic prevention and control has achieved significant results, yet the global situation remains serious. To strengthen students' sense of mission and responsibility during the fight against the pandemic and to correctly understand international public opinion, undergraduate students at the School of Languages and Communication Studies launched a major discussion on "Fostering a Sense of a Global Community of Shared Future and Joining Hands to Combat COVID-19." This discussion was centered on the current state of the pandemic's development and involved comparative analysis of pandemic control policies across different countries.

Last week, the School’s undergraduates across all grades utilized WeChat class groups to conduct online thematic class meetings on "The Pandemic and the Global Community of Shared Future."

As the pandemic spreads across the world, the future of humanity is closely interconnected. As students majoring in foreign languages and communication studies, they have acquired knowledge about the languages, history, culture, and cross-cultural communication practices of their target countries. Paying attention to international public opinion and deeply exploring the spread and development of the pandemic within a global context is of great significance for cultivating students' independent thinking on current hot topics, broadening their international perspective, and strengthening their awareness of a global community of shared future. At this stage, many of our exchange students remain overseas. Through the participation of these students abroad, their peers in China gained a direct understanding of the severity of the global pandemic spread. The overseas students themselves have repeatedly expressed admiration for the strength of their homeland, feeling proud of the robust, effective, responsible, and internationally impactful measures taken by their motherland during this pandemic.

All classes actively participated in the discussions. Students from Communication Studies Class 1601 stated that the pandemic has brought various uncertainties, risks, and challenges to the world. However, behind these challenges, we see the joint efforts and mutual assistance of people worldwide. We believe that while the virus is ruthless, the world is full of love. Our country will shoulder the responsibility of fighting the pandemic, joining hands with all nations and peoples to overcome this crisis together.

Students from English Class 1702 proposed that in an era of globalization, opportunities are global, and so are risks and challenges. Any pandemic could occur in China or in any other country. Only by supporting each other in times of crisis can human society embrace a better and healthier future.

Students from Spanish Class 1901 also clearly recognized that Chinese youth need to expand their global vision and jointly contribute to winning the battle against the virus, the battle for economic recovery, and the battle to safeguard people’s livelihoods, while navigating international public opinion and managing China-U.S. strategic competition. Guided by the concept and vision of a "global community of shared future", we can create a brighter future.

Through this major discussion, the students deeply reached a consensus: Living in the same global village and the same historical moment, humanity is increasingly becoming a community of shared future where "you are in me, and I am in you". Viruses know no borders; the entire globe faces them together. No individual can remain completely unaffected in a public health crisis, and no country can stand entirely aloof. The pandemic is a raging fire, and our destinies are intertwined. The fight against COVID-19 is not a battle for one country or one nation alone; it requires the concerted efforts and shared struggle of all people globally. Simultaneously, everyone expressed their determination to study diligently, engage in practical work, and use their professional knowledge to make due contributions to promoting international exchange, disseminating Chinese culture, and enhancing the nation's image and international discourse power.
