Our University Achieves Best-Ever Result

in 8th SFLEP Cup National College Students’

Intercultural Competence Contest

From November 1 to 2, 2025, the Beijing Regional Finals of the 8th SFLEP Cup National College Students’ Intercultural Competence Contest was held at Capital Medical University. The team selected by the Public English Teaching Department of the School of Languages and Communication Studies at our University stood out among 38 competing teams, winning the First Prize in the Chinese Students (English) category. This marks the best performance in our University's history of participating in this contest, and our University was also awarded the "Outstanding Organization Award".

The Contest is recognized by the Undergraduate School of our University as a national-level public discipline competition. It serves as an important platform for evaluating outcomes in foreign language teaching and intercultural talent cultivation. Through an initial university-wide selection process, the team was formed, comprising three second-year students: Zhao Zhirui (School of Computer Science and Technology), Yuan Rongjing (School of Electronic and Information Engineering), and Sun Chuhan (School of Languages and Communication Studies). They were coached by teachers Tang Xuehua, Wang Yuntong, and Zhou Qi.

After the internal selection in May 2025, the team immediately began preparation. During the summer vacation, under the guidance of Teacher Tang Xuehua, the team systematically studied intercultural theories and case studies. From September to November, during the intensive preparation phase, the team overcame scheduling conflicts between academic coursework and contest preparation by adopting a model of "two concentrated training sessions per week + targeted refinement by modules". They repeatedly simulated various cultural scenarios and meticulously calibrated expression details. The instructors provided comprehensive guidance and carefully designed the intercultural case titled "Seedlings: Chinese Hybrid Rice Taking Root in Africa". Based on the story of Yuan Longping's team assisting Africa, the case incorporated themes of the Belt and Road Initiative and China-Africa cooperation, demonstrating both innovation and practical relevance. The case was validated with input from members of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences' Agricultural Aid Expert Group to Africa and African graduate students of our University, ensuring its authenticity and credibility.

After more than two months of high-intensity training, the team achieved comprehensive improvement from theoretical understanding to stage performance. In the Semi-final, our University's intercultural short play was highly praised by the judges. The Finals consisted of three segments: a quiz on intercultural communication knowledge, English-language situated commentary on business and current affairs videos, and presentation on Chinese stories. The three team members, leveraging their solid language skills, intercultural knowledge, and flexible problem-solving abilities, collaborated effectively and responded calmly. Ultimately, they secured the 4th place in Beijing, achieving a historic breakthrough based on their combined strengths in "content depth, expressiveness, and teamwork".

The Beijing Regional Finals was co-organized by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the Beijing Association of Higher Education, and Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. The Contest aims to "promote teaching, learning, and development through competition", enhance students' cultural consciousness and confidence, and cultivate foreign language talents with both patriotic sentiment and global vision.

This achievement underscores our University's solid foundation in foreign language education and intercultural talent cultivation, while also accumulating valuable experience for future competitions.
