Winter Vacation Activities for International Students of Beijing Jiaotong University--welcome, reflection, and thanksgiving

On February 8th, eight international student representatives from six different countries attended a cultural event on the theme of “Welcome, Reflections and Gratitude” at the International Student Services Hall of the College of International Education. Liu Yanqing, the Dean of the College of International Education, the teachers of the College, and international student representatives joined the event. They learned about folk culture such as Chinese tea, writing blessings characters, and cutting papers for window decorations. The activities enriched the students’ holiday campus life and warmed their hearts like spring.

Not only that, they also experienced and practiced spring under the guidance of Chinese culture teachers, from watching, writing and sticking spring to enjoying spring. The international students of “Belt and Road” program from the School of Traffic and Transportation said: “Let’s put the hopeful “Chun” character on the locomotive on campus, as if the footsteps of spring are moving forward with our future.” After that, the students gave the scarves with “Fu” character, which means blessing, to the security guards on campus to thank them for their hard work and to make everyone feel a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. The festive atmosphere was spread to every corner of the campus.

In this activity, the school also distributed free meal coupons for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and new year gift packages to the international students. The event was part of a series of Chinese New Year activities for current international students, which are continuing in an orderly manner. Previously, the New Year’s English Corner launched by the College of International Education promoted cultural exchanges between Chinese and foreign students while helping Chinese students practice spoken English. The college also encouraged overseas students to participate in the school’s “Firecrackers for Spring-Taste of Chinese New Year” activity, so that the overseas students could also experience the atmosphere of Spring Festival.

In this winter vacation, nearly 200 international students from more than 50 countries around the world stayed on campus. After the start of the winter vacation, the College of International Education held an offline symposium with representatives of North Korean and Kenyan students at school to understand the needs and difficulties of students. The college’s psychological counseling teacher carried out online “one-to-one” in-depth counseling, and actively helped them solve problems in their studies and lives. In addition, BJTU also sent holiday greetings to more than 20 international students outside the campus.
